Coronavirus: US Consumers Brace For Price Increases As Inflation Forecast Hits 8 Year High As It Happened

A G7 pledge of 1bn coronavirus jabs for poorer countries to help inoculate the world has drawn fire from campaigners for failing to bridge the vast global divide in supplies of the life-saving vaccines. The initiative looks

too small, too slow and too narrow to meet its target, according to advocates for greater access to vaccines.

Boris Johnson, UK prime minister, is set to delay the lifting of remaining coronavirus restrictions in England for a month after Chris Whitty, his chief medical adviser, pressed him to postpone the move following a

surge in Covid-19 cases. The restrictions are meant to end on June 21. An announcement is due on Monday.

In 2004, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed an agreement with the Chinese National Influenza Centre to help China improve

analysis of seasonal flu. Scientists are now worried that such collaborations are under threat because of a row over whether Covid-19 could have originated from a lab in Wuhan.

The UK medicines regulator is carrying out checks on rapid Covid-19 tests from the Innova, government’s main supplier, following a

stinging rebuke of the product from the US Food and Drug Administration. FDA officials raised concerns on Thursday that Innova was distributing its lateral flow tests in the US without its approval.

The British Property Federation said a large majority of landlords and tenants had reached agreement on what to do about the roughly £6bn in rent debt built up during the pandemic. But landlords have been frustrated by an

aggressive minority of tenants — such as Frasers Group and Boots — who refuse to engage or compromise.

The chief executive of GSK’s consumer healthcare business expects the company — newly separated from the pharma arm — to make deals in growth areas such as vitamins in a

sector ripe for consolidation. Brian McNamara told the Financial Times the business would be able to do smaller deals, despite being loaded with debt.

Novavax said its Covid-19 vaccine targeted at the Beta variant is effective at protecting against several strains of the disease, adding to hopes that existing adaptations of the virus can be managed with booster shots. Its variant-adapted vaccine produced antibodies and elicited immune responses in three early-stage studies.

Moderna on Friday said it has not found a link between its Covid-19 vaccine and cases of

heart inflammation in some people who received the jab. The drugmaker said it was “aware of reports of myocarditis and/or pericarditis” in some people who had taken its vaccine, but a review “has not established a causal association”.
